JANIECE JAFFE – MONIKA HERZIG Both Sides of Joni (Acme Records, JM001): Der Rampensauerei des Theaters stehe ich so ratlos gegenüber wie dem Belcanto der Oper, dem Gehampel der Dackekotszene und den Reizen des Mainstreamjazz. Daher fehlen mir die richtigen Worte, um zu würdigen, wie Monika Herzig, die von der Schwäbischen Alb stammende, 1988 in die USA gezogene, in Bloomington (Indiana) als ‘JazzHero’ gefeierte Pianistin, die neun von Janiece Jaffe angestimmten Songs von Joni Mitchell nach allen Regeln der Kunst verjazzt hat. Mit Greg Ward am Saxophon, Jeremy Allen am Bass und Cassius Goens an Drums singt Jaffe ‘Help me’, I think I’m fallin’ in love again / When I get that crazy feelin’, I know I’m in trouble again…, I’ve looked at love from ‘both sides now’ / From give and take and still somehow / It’s love’s illusions that I recall… ‘I think I understand’ / Fear is like a wilderland / Stepping stones or sinking sand… Oh, I wish I had a ‘river’ / I could skate away on / But it don’t snow here… das bittere’Don’t interrupt the sorrow’ mit seinem rebellischen Anima rising / She’s a vengeful little goddess und A rebel loves a cause… ‘My old man’, he’s a singer in the park / He’s a walker in the rain / He’s a dancer in the dark… She could see the valley barbecues / From her window sill / See the blue pools in the squinting sun / Hear ‘the hissing of summer lawns’ und die Grillen vor dem goldenen Käfig… I lay down golden, in time / And woke up vanishing / Sweet bird, you are / Briefer than a falling star… und schließt mit We’re captive on the carousel of time / We can’t return, we can only look / Behind, from where we came / And go round and round and round, in ‘the circle game’. Jaffe ist nicht Mitchell, aber mit Herzigs Sophistication und ihrem leicht angedunkelten Timbre ruft sie – die leider Ende 2022 überraschend gestorben ist – in intimster Anverwandlung das autofiktionale Mirakel dieser genialen Über-Songs zurück und herunter von ganz da oben, wo „The Hissing of Summer Lawns“, „Heijira“, „Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter’ und „Mingus“ bei mir neben Laura Nyros „Eli and The Thirteenth Confession“ thronen.
